Nordkyststien

Nordkyststien, North Coast Path, Hundested – Gilleleje - Helsingør, 110 km, 6 days

The Nordkyststien, or North Coast Path, is a walk along the north coast of the Sjælland, the island where Copenhagen is located. The path starts in Hundested, at the entrance of the Isefjord. Here it connects to the Fjordstien. The trail continues eastward along the coast, some 100 km, up till Helsingør, a beautiful city from where the ferries come and go. Helsingborg, in Sweden, is visible on the other side of the Øresund.

What is the hike like? It is a coastal walk, of course, but not like many other Danish coastal walks (Denmark indeed is the country of coastal walks), which generally offer a benevolent tranquillity, few people, lots of sea, lots of nature.

This coast is different. Over the centuries, the well-to-do built houses here for recreation. It's rather an upmarket area. Beautiful old houses alternate with beaches and small fishing ports. Famous Actic explorer Knud Rasmussen lived here, and his house is on display. All this adds to the special atmosphere.

The Nordkyststien is also a cycle route. But at least half the route, cyclists and hikers are separated. You will often walk on the beach or along steep cliffs. There are many B & B addresses and hotels.
