The Ennstaler Alps, a modest limestone massif, is situated along the northern bank of the river Enns, in eastern Austria. The river cuts very deep into the massif, creating on of the most dramatic sights of the country. The mountains form a part of the Northern Limestone Alps. The highest elevation is the Großer Buchstein (2.224 m), not very high, but difficult to get to the top.

If we would include the Gesäuse mountains in this region, the Hochtor would be the highest summit (2,369 m). This mountain is not suitable for the average hiker.
