Suck Valley Way near Castlerea

Suck Valley Way, Castlerea - Castlerea, 105 km, 5 days

Not the spectacular mountains of Cork and Kerry, but a flat rural plain?! Yes, and you will enjoy the quietness of this unknown corner of Ireland. The Suck Valley is a valuable habitat for rare plants and many bird species (corncrake!). Bog, wet grasslands and heather are well preserved here. The scenery is open and a loosely formed. The river itself is allowed to meander freely, something that has become rare on the continent.

The path describes a circle, starting and ending in Castlerea (or any other village of choice). The villages offer accommodation of all kinds. The online documentation of this path is excellent.

Part of the Suck Valley Way - the section between Ballygar and Ballymoe - is used for the Beara Breifne Way, the long distance path connecting the rugged Atlantic coast to the Ulster border via the unknown heartland of Ireland.
