The enormous North African country of Libya borders on the Mediterranean Sea, and most of it is covered by the Libyan Desert. Temperatures here rise to extremes. In many parts it doesn't rain at all for years in a row.

The Saharan mountain range of Tadrart Acacus in the west of Libya offers hiking possibilities, and fascinating prehistoric rock-art at that. Other interesting mountain areas are Akhdar, Nafusa, and the remote volcanic Waw an Namus. Hiking, with or without camels, is possible with a guide.
