The Nordsøstien proper is the trail between Ebeltoft and Agger on Jutland. This trail was created to fill in the gap of the international North Sea Trail project in Denmark. The other parts of the North Sea Trail are the Sjællandsleden on the island of Sjælland and the Drivvejen in the west of Jutland.
In a wider sense, the name Nordsøstien is now also used for the entire 1.500 km North Sea Trail in Denmark, including the Sjællandsledenand Drivveje.
Let's focus on the Nordsøstien proper. It starts in Ebeltoft, east Jutland, where it meets the ferry from Sjælland and turns north to Grenå. On this first leg the trail runs parallel to the Molsruten. The trail continues north and rounds the whole of Jutlands North coast up till Bulbjerg. From this village, the trail continues to Agger and the sea entrance to the Limfjorden. This leg between Bulbjerg and Agger is also called the Vestkystleden. From here, take the ferry to the other side of Limfjordens sea entrance and continue the North Sea Trail by Drivvejen.
What's the hike like? You will walk along the coast, obviously, which is very varied and attractive. Extensive dune areas alternate with cliffs. Beaches and beach resorts alternate with fishing villages and market towns. Agricultural land alternates with raised bogs. There are lakes, fjords, hills and forest (mostly tree plantations). The landscape west of Skagen, Denmarks most northern point, is dominated by sands. The country as a whole is surprisingly tranquil. Accommodation options are plentiful along the coast.
